One day in Madrid is not enough to visit all the beautiful places, to walk calmly in the streets and typical neighborhoods, visit local bars or taste the delicious Spanish cuisine. I will share with you about the first time I visited Madrid. An unforgettable day we spent with my family and my husband’s sister and nephew last year.
Because we already live in Spain only 40 km. from Madrid we chose to go by car. On Saturdays and Sundays, it’s difficult to find a free parking space, and finally we could find a place in a paid parking lot in the center.
It’s time to start our walk in Madrid
Fortunately, my husband’s sister has lived for nine years in Spain, several of whom lived in Madrid and that means we have the perfect guide. The weather is pleasant for early spring but it’s a little bit dark and that has affected the quality of the pictures.
Grand Via is the large central boulevard of shops, hotels and theaters. All of the buildings are very beautiful and there is my favorite Metropolis building.
Now that we have spent energy, it’s time to rest. We sit in a restaurant where we eat typical Spanish cuisine stuff. I don’t have pictures from lunch so I will miss the annotations. But I can mention my favorite and my favorite things: paella, tortilla, fried squid, pimentos padron, and during summer, my favorite cold soups Gazpacho and Salmorejo. Something curious is how to choose a good place to eat: when there are more thrown napkins on the floor around the bar the better the place is. Strange.
After a nice break, we go to see the royal palace “Palacio Real”. Of course, it’s incredibly beautiful as it’s park. Against it we saw the Almudena Cathedral, which is the largest cathedral in Madrid, once again unbelievable architecture and beauty.
We continued the walk to the place I look forward to: Chocolatería San Guines. One of the most famous places in Madrid that since 1894 offers hot chocolate with churros and porras. This is something typical that you shouldn’t miss. They are the favorite of our whole family.
Then we continued to walk, followed by the Zeroth kilometer, Puerta del sol, where the bear’s statue symbolizes a bear statue facing the tree “El Oso y el Madroño”, then we went to the Plaza Mayor. The next stop is the “Mercado de San Miguel” covered market, where we were again trying something tasty like oysters and different types of tapas. We went back to Gran Via returning to the car but it was already getting dark and we could see all the beautiful buildings already in a different shine lit by colorful lights.
Of course, there are many places we didn’t see and didn’t visit but in one day it isn’t possible to visit every beautiful place and we wanted a nice day without running from one place to another to see as much as possible.
That was an amazing and fun day with my family.
That was my first time visiting Madrid and so began my love with this beautiful city.
